Last weekend we went to the SoapFactory to see an art opening with 20 different local artists. I really like one of them, a photographer, and it takes a lot for me to like photographs. I sometimes feel like it's too easy, or what you're trying to say in a photo is too vague. Anyway when I got home I remembered her name and sent her an email saying to keep up the good work. The next day I got a reply that thanked me and asked in I was interested in collaboration with her, she'd been to my ...

I myself enjoy wearing knee-high, black dress socks. I only have one pair because they're hard to find these days so I will usually reserve them for a Monday when I don't really feel like getting up and going to work. Today was that day. Now I get to push them down and vigorously scratch my lower appendages. Awesome.

Yesterday I stopped in Precious Moment Herbs and Books to pick up some herbs for tea. I love that store because you walk in and it's the quintessential stereotype of a hippie/new age store, from the lingering smell of incense to the aging hippies who work there to the well-thumbed through display rack of tarot decks. I never went there until this summer, since I don't need to stock up on my wiccan supplies I just assumed they didn't have anything I would want.
If you've never heard of this humble musician & songwriter, here is a good place to begin.

From www.kidbrothers.net

At the time, I was an insecure and inexperienced songwriter who wanted to become an artist. I thought it would be nice to have the opinion of a songwriter who had "made it," so I gave Rich a demo tape and asked for a critique, since I would be traveling to Nashville a few days after the concert to see if doors would open for me.

     But Rich refused. ...

So Friday I got up and got dressed for work and thought my outfit needed a little extra. So I grabbed one of Rachel's old seventies scarves and tied it around my neck. Yes I looked very hipster. I have never worn a scarf before, aside from working on a roof or in a garden. Rachel told me not to wear it, said it looked silly. I rode my bike to work and noticed a lot of people staring at me. I thought, you cannot handle my hipness can you? I got on the elevator and this old guy in a ...

my daily awesome for yesterday was when someone at work came up to me and asked if I could get them a job in the mailroom because they love handling mail. she said she knew it sounded crazy.
Recently I found out about a project a friend of mine has been working on. It made me smile. I think it is an outstanding way of connecting with and remembering the people in our lives.

Here's how she explained it:

"When I was 19 I moved to Los Angeles. That was when the cheap thrill of collecting post cards began. My sheltered life in the Midwest suburbs hadn't exposed me to the genius idea of postcards used as advertisement. I quickly grew an obsession of stuffing those free postcards ...

Saturday, with two friends, we went to the pharmacy and bought three kites and like samurai we biked with them wrapped up and shoved down the backs of our shirts. Swords they were as we fiercely attacked the day. We found an empty baseball field, next to teams of fully uniformed Africans playing cricket. The sky was blue and warm, the breeze was cool and strong. Our kites flew and crashed together and we ran around to untangle them while they hung in the air. It was the best sort of challenge.

I just got home from a 12 day vacation. It was very nice and I can't say enough good things about the east coast. New York, Boston and Road Island. All very beautiful stops. With good friends made it all that much better. However, what I will talk about is how nice it was to get home. When I got home my fish was fed, mail brought in to the house, garden watered and growing healthy and the grass was cut. This was due to the excellent neighbors I have Brad, Jen and Joe. It was so nice to come ...

Yesterday I realized that there was a repetitive problem that would take several hours to fix, and that it would be my boss's boss's job to sort out. I sent her an email and said I'd like to take care of it. It felt so good to do, because I was electing to do it. Much better than if they'd asked me. Also my bosses were surprised and sent me emails IN ALL CAPS with THREE !!! after each line telling me THANKS SO MUCH!!!. In addition I got out of doing a menial task I didn't want to do. ...

My daily awesome for Tuesday was when my friend Mike, whom I was driving to the airport to catch a flight to Denver, told me that he'd spent his morning scrubbing the kitchen floor of his old apartment, his afternoon eating fried cheese curds on a slab of concrete at the State Fair, and that tonight he would be dinning and drinking with congresspeople and super delegates at the Democratic National Convention. It's like a Cinderella story!

Today I ran into an old friend at the co-op down the street from my house. It was a nice reminder of one of the things I love about Minneapolis (most of the time), it seems like you're either running into someone you know on every corner, or realizing the person you just met was best friends with your neighbor in kindergarten or something.

Saturday was the annual trip to the MN state fair, it can't sufficiently be explained, it must be experienced. It is a big daily awesome.

The state fair is an event where you can see bunnies small enough to fit into teacups and bunnies that a small child could safely ride on. There is an abundance of fried food and folks from every corner of the state. There is also a wide variety of political ads sported on buttons, t-shirts, and occasionally in the find art form known as "seed art." ...

My daily awesome for yesterday was going to see the Minnesota state fair's side show at the Midway. When I was six years old living in Kansas my dad took me to see a traveling circus. I swear i remember seeing elephants being used to put up the tent, but maybe that was just Disney cartoons clouding my memories. My father and I went to see the side show and it was incredible and scary. At one point a scantly-clad woman was placed in a box that the magician pierced with dozens of wooden poles. ...

The night was cold and gross. Behind me, the city gave off this pink light turning the solid grey sky into a sick intestine color. It was bitterly cold as I walked away from downtown Minneapolis towards home. Why do I work until dark every night? I hate my job, it’s pointless, and why am I doing this to myself, I thought. The temperature had risen during the day and then dropped, but it might as well have rained with the amount of ice covering the sidewalks. I had to pay attention to avoid ...

I needed something to read, because, well, my job can get really boring and it's good to have something to keep you going. I was in a hurry so I grabbed the first book I hadn't read John Steinbeck's America and Americans and Selected Nonfiction.
The seeds for this project were planted during a long, dark Minnesota winter. Many conversations later it became apparent that there is a genuine desire for this type of community. Many of us want to change our attitudes and the way we interact with the world, but this is hard to do alone. So, let's do it together.

I'm an artist in my late twenties and I find that cynicism is the prevalent attitude in my age and peer group. This attitude it tiring. I'm ready to change it. I believe that ...
